Curriculum
Intentions of the Rushmere Hall Curriculum
At Rushmere Hall, our curriculum is broad, balanced and bespoke to our children. Our curriculum has been written in the most part by our staff for our pupils. It carefully takes into consideration the local context but also opens doors to the wider world. In this sense, we see our curriculum as a mirror and a door: a mirror to the children’s own lives, to help them understand themselves, where they live and their place in society, and a door to the wider world, so they are excited and ambitious to explore all the possibilities and diversity our world has to offer. Our intention is that children leave us at the end of year six with a very strong foundation in all subjects, so that they are able to follow any path they choose; so that anything is possible.
When designing our curriculum, we are precise with the knowledge and skills we have chosen for pupils to learn. Learning is carefully sequenced and progressive. We are led by educational research and we work collaboratively with colleagues in school and across our multi-academy trust, as well as consulting subject experts when needed. We take the work of curriculum design extremely seriously and we are constantly refining, improving and iterating our curriculum in response to our pupils’ needs.
Key threads run through our curriculum from Nursery to Year 6 and build progressively. We make strong links between subjects to ensure that children build a rich schema to know and remember more. High quality books are absolutely at the heart of our curriculum and these are chosen very thoughtfully to support all subject areas and to build a love of reading.
We aim to make learning memorable and we use educational trips, theme days and visitors to enhance understanding.
We greatly value the role of parents in our children’s education and regularly welcome parents into school to join in with lessons.
